Eco living
This is very weird. I was just about to write a post about eco-materials and was searching for previous eco-related posts so as to be able refer back to them. Well, I couldn’t find any! We have been running this blog for two years now and surely we have written about being green, the importance of sustainable design and eco-friendly interiors???? It seems, we haven’t. Shame on us!
Actually, at ForLook we used to consider using sustainable materials and energy-efficient appliances well before it was politically correct or fashionable to do so. In fact I’ve always tried to do my bit for the environment - recycled, used non solvent-based paints (even though they were useless), cycled - and not because I was told to do so by the Government but because I felt it was the right thing to do. However, I do object to authorities telling me how to separate my rubbish, how to paint my house, how to commute, how much water I should use etc. But that’s a different subject…
Anyway, we at ForLook do believe that designers have an obligation to design energy-efficient products and sustainable homes using eco-friendly materials. Clients follow our lead and suggestions, therefore it’s very important how & where things are made and what sort of materials & products are used in a project.
In our eco-home series we’ll write about the following subjects:
- Eco materials
- Sustainable housing
- Saving Energy
- Green living
- Ecological interiors
We’ll discuss the easiest or the best methods to save energy and to live in a way that is kind to our environment yet does not totally compromise our comfort and standard of living. Also, as far as interiors are concerned, being green doesn’t mean cork tiles and ugly objects – we’ll show you some stylish yet environmentally friendly ideas!
We welcome our readers (both designers and non-designers) to contribute with tips and ideas, or just to express their opinions. Although being eco-friendly is now a lifestyle trend - or even a must for some p.c. people - if all of us did just a little bit every day, perhaps we can save our planet. And the easiest place to start is our nearest and dearest place - our home!
So watch this space!

I totally agree with you. I am an interior designer in Portland Oregon and last year I scrapped all of my not earth friendly referrals and started to promote eco-friendly and eco-chic products and services in Portland. Since I started I have filled an entire book of referrals that are eco-friendly and was so inspired by it that I started my own blog called PinknGreen–Finding the feminine (pink) in the Green Movement. Find it at: http://www.cheryljanisstyle.com/pinkngreen. I even took it a STEP further. I decided to produced and host an Eco-Chic Vlog Series, Called PinknGreen: Exploring Eco-Chic in Portland and Beyond. I have filmed 7 episodes so far (hasn’t gone live yet) including wonderful planet friendly stores like 10,000 Villages, SchoolHouse Electric, EWF Modern and local eco-friendly fashion designers. It’s been so incredibly inspiring not only to support the idea of beauty and sustainability but also to support the local economy here. Portland is experiencing a Renaissance right now and everything Green is happening right here, right now. I’m excited to be here in the moment to share that! I will be filming another 7 episodes before I go live on January 1st! A teaser will be posted in the next week or so.

My company is specialized in the production of japanese hinoki wood soaking bathtubs.
Ecology is ETHICAL but if it has to win against consumerism, it also needs to be APPEALING.
(See how the Slow-food revolution targeted the senses first to aim at a broader social-economic-economic project).
Here are some reasons for which I would like to point your attention to hinoki tubs as an highly ecological material:
- japanese style bathing (soaking tub for all the family) greatly cuts on water usage and energy cost.
- spending time in the bath makes you experience the beauty and value of nature with the 5 senses. Once people understand and love nature, they are more prone to respect it.
- use of japanese forests (which are sustainabilly managed) promotes rural economies and traditional communities.
Hinoki is known for its aroma-therapeutic properties and natural resistance to humidity and rot.
All our items are custom made in Japan in the traditional way using high quality kiso valley hinoki wood.
Please contact me for any question.

Greetings from Germany. Prescriptions for privat homes getting tougher and tougher here and legislation seems to stretch into every patch of private and public space. This is certainly something we all could do without.
Nevertheless the idea of the eco-friendly house is gaining more and more fascination. The selfsufficient house is becoming the trend for the future and is merging with other trends in living as “pure and simple”. After all this is a good development isn´t it ?

We are building a house and guesthouse in Marrakech and are doing our best to make it as green as possible. Of course one of the most eco-friendly things to do with interiors is to buy old or vintage pieces rather than new. I am particularly fond of vintage textiles, and vintage or antique furniture to mix it all up!

I am a student of interior designing presently doing thesis on eco-friendly interior spaces. It will be very helpful if I get resources or related data regarding the same.

Hi All,
My family and I, have really started looking at the way in which some little changes we make in day-to-day living can help in someway to living a greener lifestyle.
The current issue we were most concerned about is the ‘Plastic Bag’ issue, some UK retailers have now started charging for every ‘Plastic Shopping Bag’ they supply. This lead us to start using our rucksacks for loading groceries in to.
That aside we were looking for other ways in to a more eco-friendly lifestyle and came across this information, which I thought some of you might like to read - Eco-Licing Guide

Some important points here. We are doing our bit to improve access to ethical and eco-friendly interiors whilst also providing unique, design-led products which we know are important for interior designers and their clients. Currently, we stock a range of eco interiors including lighting, soft furnishings and linen but we hope to incorporate bigger statement pieces and furniture very soon too.
