London Design Festival

Today is the beginning of the London Design Festival. This is the festival’s fifth year - it will last for 11 days. There will be many events, projects & exhibitions spreading across the city. However, the hub of the festival is the South Bank - specifically the Royal Festival Hall, where you attend talks and can find out about all the contributing events.

These are the main events during the London Design Festival:..

Designers in Residence
Design Museum
12 Sep-14 Oct
This exhibition shows new talents in furniture and product design - all of them have graduated during the last five years. Find out more at www.designmuseum.org

The Materials Project
South Bank
15-25 September
Along the South Bank, architects and designers will be displaying installations focusing on the potential of certain materials such as Corian and concrete. Look out for well-known designers’ displays (such as Zaha Hadid & Thomas  Heatherwick) - if you like them you can buy them at the Walking Auction held at the end of the festival.

Tom Dixon in Trafalgar Square
17-22 September
Dixon will create a lighting installation at Trafalgar Sq using 2500 low energy bulbs and other recycled items to draw attention to sustainability in design. If you’re lucky you might get a CFL (compact fluorescent light) bulb used in his work.

Designersblock
The Nicholls & Clarke Building
Shoreditch High St E1
19-23 September
This exhibition celebrates 10 years of Designersblock by showing ideas and products of new, talented designers.  They also provide the venue for the Handled with Care event - showing ceramic work with established and emerging designers. They will also host Liquid Glass, an interactive show whereby they will recycle thousands of glass bottles left over after each event. Read more at www.designersblock.org.uk

Tent London
Truman Brewery E1
20-23 September
This event is a series of shows and installations - by the same team who created 100% design.

    Hi there,

I visited the Chelsea Design Center last Sunday (the opening trade day of the latest London Design Week) and had an absolutely fantastic time.

I’d reccomend the Chelsea Design Center to anyone, although you may have to do with out the chapagne if you go on a public day.

    Cheers

    Mich
