Trendy wallpaper

Further to my post about what wallpaper to use in the contemporary interior, I’d like to add to the list of interesting or must-have patterns. The following represent the latest trends in wallpaper design.

Check out Elitis for interesting patterns. Unfortunately their website isn’t very good at showing details of their wallpaper range, but you can browse through their fantastic collection in person at Abbott & Boyd in Chelsea Harbour..

If you’re looking for traditional patterns and motives, Farrow & Ball have a wide range of collections. Dunford Wood provide very good collections of handmade wallpapers whilst Osborne & Little have really pretty and interesting collections of wallpaper – check out their Boheme range! For a contemporary twist on traditional and retro patters check out the Wild at Heart range at Nono or Neisha Crosland’s  collections.

In the previous article we recommended Muraspec for textured wall coverings. Knoll also has a good range of sophisticated wall coverings – paper backed linen, silk, suede-like textiles as well as woven vinyl fibres and ecological products. For damask wall coverings, Colefax & Fowler have a nice range of patterns, called the Cranbourne. Their flower prints also worth looking at.

For kids’ rooms check out the fantastic wallpapers at Eijffinger - they offer nice large digital images that fit a whole wall of your child’s room.

Most of these wallpapers are quite pricy. However, if you want something unique and different – it’s worth every penny.  As I keep saying, the modern way to use wallpaper is covering only one wall with it. By doing this you create a feature wall that draws the eye to the design. If you cover all walls with patterned wallpaper, this not only makes a room look smaller – but it can also make you feel restless and edgy.

If you’re on a really tight budget, you can always check out the high streets or home stores – they are catching up with trendy designs on their wallpapers. In a future article I’ll look into this and try to find you some good bargains!

Also take a look at Studio Printworks out of New York, they do a series of great modern interpretations of classic designs, new colors etc. Don’t miss the whimsical “South Beach Toile”

Commware International don’t have ranges, you just ask them to design your own personal wallpaper (or even if you have your own design)and they can print it either digitally or by the traditional hand-screen method. Neither are as expensive as you would think for a bespoke wallcovering.
